L'origine del nome Australian Cattle Dog

The Australian Cattle Dog owes its name to the function for which it was selected: "Australian" because it was developed in Australia and "Cattle Dog" because it was bred to herd and manage cattle.

Cenni Storici

The Australian Cattle Dog was bred to assist with the expansion of cattle ranching in early Australia. The main requirements were a strong, biting dog with great stamina and the ability to move and gather wild cattle. It is generally recognized that the breed is the result of crosses between blue-merle Short-haired Collies and Dingoes, followed by further crossing with Dalmatians and black and tan Kelpie bloodlines.

Cenni sullo Standard di Razza

  • Aspetto Generale

It is that of a strong, compact working dog, of symmetrical build, which has the ability and desire to fulfil the task assigned to it, however arduous it may be. Its combination of substance, power, and balance, together with a solid muscular condition, must convey an impression of great agility, strength, and endurance. Any tendency to coarseness or frailty is a serious fault.

  • Andatura e Movimento

The gait is frank, free, elastic and effortless, and the movement of the shoulders and forelegs is in harmony with the powerful drive from the hindquarters. The ability to move quickly and suddenly is essential. Soundness is of paramount importance.
At a trot, the feet tend to converge towards the ground as speed increases, but when the dog stops, all four limbs must be perfectly plumb.

    Comportamento e Carattere

The loyalty of the Cattle Dog and its innate protective instinct make it a reliable guardian for its cattle, flock, and property. Although naturally suspicious of strangers, it must be amenable to handling, particularly in the show ring. Any trait, in character or structure, that is foreign to the nature of a working dog, must be considered a serious fault.

Origine Geografica: AUSTRALIA

The Australian Cattle Dog originated in the vast territories of Australia, a continent characterized by great distances, often hot and arid climates, and challenging natural environments. Being able to accompany and control livestock over long and demanding routes, enduring heat, water scarcity, and rough terrain, was therefore an indispensable requirement for a sheepdog. It was precisely this extreme environment that influenced its selection: the Australian Cattle Dog became a robust, tireless, and intelligent dog, perfectly adapted to Australian conditions and working with herds.

Dettagli Fisici

TAGLIA

Un Australian Cattle Dog 46-51 cm for males
43-48 cm for females

PROPORZIONI

The body length, measured from the sternum to the point of the buttock,
is greater than the height at the withers in a proportion of 10 to 9.

If the height at the withers is 50 cm, the body length is calculated as follows:

50 × 10/9 = 55.56 cm

For example:
Height at withers: 50 cm
Body length: 55.6 cm (approx.)

  • Come si presenta

The coat is smooth, double, with a short, dense undercoat. The topcoat is dense; each hair is straight, harsh, and flat, making it waterproof. Under the body and extending to the rear of the legs, the hair is longer and forms a sort of breeches near the thighs, without exaggeration. On the head (including the inside of the ears), on the front of the legs, and on the feet, the hair is short. On the neck, it is longer and thicker.
On average, the hair on the body should be between 2.5 cm and 4 cm long.

  • Colori Ammessi

The "red" coat is bicolor, white and red.

Other permitted coats are defined by the concentration of white hair in spots of varying sizes.
