Cenni Storici

Probably one of the oldest spaniel-type dogs, improved since the early 20th century through various crosses and selections. A draft breed standard, drawn up in Nantes in 1907, was presented and adopted at the Club's first plenary assembly in Loudéac (formerly Côtes du Nord) on June 7, 1908. This was the first standard of the "Club de l'Epagneul Breton à courte queue naturelle."

  • Aspetto Generale

The smallest of the pointing dogs. The Brittany Spaniel is a braccoid with a short or absent tail. Harmoniously built with a solid but not heavy bone structure.
The overall impression is compact and well-proportioned, without heaviness, and maintaining
sufficient elegance. The dog is vigorous, with a lively gaze and an intelligent expression.
The general appearance is that of a small "brevilinear COB", full of energy, which has retained, throughout its evolution, the brevilinear model sought after and established by those who reformed the breed.

  • Andatura e Movimento

The different gaits are easy yet powerful, regular and lively. The limbs move straight without exaggerated vertical body oscillations and without rolling, while the topline remains stable. The canter is the common gait in the field, with quick, medium-length strides; the hindquarters are not thrown back (collected canter).

  • Comportamento e Carattere

This is a dog that adapts to any social environment, with an intelligent and attentive expression, and a balanced mind. A versatile pointing dog, for all game, on all terrains, quick to reveal its hunting passion. Exceptional for searching, movement, scent, exploring the terrain, the spontaneity and holding of the point, retrieving, and trainability.

Origine Geografica: FRANCE

The Brittany Spaniel originated in France and is historically linked to Brittany, a peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean in the northwest of the country. This region is characterized by rolling countryside, moors, woods, hedges, and a mild, humid oceanic climate, ideal for feathered game. In this environment, the breed was selected as a versatile pointing dog, developing an excellent sense of smell, great agility, and a natural predisposition for working on various terrains. The characteristics of the Breton landscape thus helped define a tireless, versatile dog, particularly appreciated by hunters.
